Sapporo’s Exciting 2020: 71st Sapporo Snow Festival and Olympic Marathon!

Sapporo City

Sapporo in 2020 is bustling with one exciting event after another!

The 71st Sapporo Snow Festival, running from January 31 to February 11, is currently in full swing at three sites across Sapporo.
What started in 1950 as six snow sculptures built in centrally located Odori Park by high school students has evolved into the city’s representative and largest annual event, drawing in over 2.5 million people every year from home and abroad. This year’s festival features over 200 intricate snow and ice sculptures, some up to 15 meters tall, as well as the delicious food and family-friendly snow activities that have become staples of the Snow Festival experience.

While famous for winter, summer in Sapporo is also worth a visit! Summertime in the city is refreshing, with little rain and cooler average temperatures than Tokyo. Considering these comfortable conditions, in addition to soccer games at Sapporo Dome, the Olympic marathon and race walking for the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics will be held in Sapporo as well! The marathon and race walk courses are set to begin in Odori Park, which is also the main venue for the Snow Festival, and will go around famous Sapporo landmarks such as the Sapporo TV Tower, Hokkaido University, and the Former Hokkaido Office Government Building. We hope to see everyone cheering for the athletes as they pass through Sapporo’s beautiful scenery!
