A day of German cooking and learning in Shizukuishi, northern Japan

Iwate Prefecture

Shizukuishi Town, a small town in Iwate, northern Japan, held a German Cooking Class and Culture Seminar in order for residents to learn more about Germany, its host town partner for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games.

German chef Markus Bos taught residents how to make Japanese food for German tastes, with dishes like fried pork rolls with green shiso leaves and miso, and eggplant marinated Chinese-style.

Following that, Yukio Hobolt, Communications and Culture Officer of the German Embassy in Japan, gave a seminar to around 80 people about the culture, food, and tourism of Germany. It was a very worthwhile occasion.

【About Germany and Shizukuishi Town】

In 1995, the Shizukuishi Town International Relations Association formed a memorandum for mutual exchange with the Germany town of Bad Wimpfen, with a student exchange program beginning in 1998. The neighboring town of Nekarsulm joined in to conduct mutual exchange with Shizukuishi starting in 2004.

The people in these towns watched in horror when the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami struck the coast of Iwate in 2011, especially the students, teachers, and alumni who had visited Shizukuishi. They wanted to help support the education of the children of schools that had been damaged by the disaster, so they began collecting donations with the slogan “Schools Saving Schools.” They sent over the donations in three installments, and the Shizukuishi Town International Relations, along with alumni of the exchange program, delivered them as well as the wellwishes of the Germany students to schools in Yamada Town and other towns on the coast of Iwate. It is thanks to this bond that Shizukuishi became a Host Town to Germany.
