2020 Tokyo Olympics: France National Women’s Rugby Sevens training camp (“Goshuincho” Temple Booklet Craft)

富士吉田市

The French national women’s rugby sevens had their training camp leading up to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in Fujiyoshida City. The training camp lasted from July 11 (Sunday) through July 26 (Monday) and on July 17 the team made their own “goshuincho” temple booklets with the help of local textile makers.
*Fujiyoshida City has a rich history of textile production and many textile factories are still in operation today. Please see here for more Host Town exchanges involving the local textile industry.

Due to COVID related restrictions, players and staff were unable to leave their hotel. Learning of the strict restrictions imposed on the team, members of the textile industry reached out, hoping to provide the team with an opportunity for some kind of cultural activity.

【Players selecting their fabric】

The players were allowed to select their preferred fabric from 20 different varieties to decorate the front and back cover of their “goshuincho”

【Listening to instructions from the textile worker】

The players were briefed on the history and cultural significance of the textile industry while receiving directions. They were also given written instructions that were translated into French.

【Success!】

The city had the booklets stamped by the Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Jinja Shrine, a component world heritage site, as a present for the team.

【2018 Pre-training】

This year, this activity was confined to the hotel where the team was staying. We hope that one day the team will be able to return and interact more with each of the many textile workers and diverse textile workshops that are offered in the region. Though in previous years the team had been blessed at Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Jinja Shrine prior to competing, they were unfortunately unable to take part in any such ceremony this year. In the future we hope to include this very special experience in their program. We will continue our close ties with the team in the hopes that the day will come when the team may return and experience all that our city has to offer.
