Students getting closer through the Australian Olympic Connect Tomodachi 2020 Pilot Program!

Iwate Prefecture

On September 3, 2020, eight middle school students from Kamaishi City participated in a workshop hosted by the Australian Olympic Committee for their Australian Olympic Connect Tomodachi 2020 Pilot Program. This program is conducted as a trial in anticipation of, although the event has been postponed to year 2021, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games and aims to promote cultural and international exchanges between 20 participating schools from Australia and Japan through an online platform. The program is split into eight workshops that will be conducted until the end of October. At the first workshop, participating students watched videos made by fellow students from Para Hills High in South Australia, then worked on creating their own self-introduction videos in both English and Japanese.

The Pilot Program is scheduled to be conducted next April to July in 2021.

(Connections between Australia and Kamaishi, Iwate)
1) Scott Fardy, a former player of the Kamaishi Rugby Football Club and also former national player for the Wallabies (Rugby Australia), decided to not to take his embassy’s offer to leave Japan at the time of the March 2011 disaster. Instead, he stayed behind to volunteer with his teammates to help with post disaster relief efforts and to distribute disaster goods for Kamaishi and its community.
2) Kamaishi City was registered as Australia’s “Arigato” Host Town for Supporting Reconstruction in November 2017.
3) Scott Fardy offers his moral support for the “We are all, one world/ Up HOST TOWN Project” and you will be able to watch his video there. The project also includes supportive messages from citizens of Kamaishi so please take a look at it if you’re interested.
